The Barnacle Historic State Park
Tucked along the shore of Biscayne Bay in the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, The Barnacle Historic State Park is a rare five-acre pocket of old Florida preserved amid one of the state’s most urban landscapes. The centerpiece is the 1891 home of Commodore Ralph Munroe, a yacht designer, photographer, and early Coconut Grove pioneer. His house — the oldest in Miami-Dade County still on its original site — was ingeniously designed to harness sea breezes and withstand hurricanes, and it remains remarkably intact.
Visitors can tour the home’s interior on guided ranger-led walks, exploring Munroe’s original furnishings, nautical artifacts, and historic photographs that document South Florida before the development boom. Outside, a canopy of hardwood hammock — one of the last remaining stretches of coastal tropical hardwood forest on the mainland — shades the grounds and leads down to a boathouse on the bay. The short trail through the hammock is flat and accessible, offering birdwatching opportunities among gumbo-limbo trees and strangler figs.
The park hosts monthly Moonlight Concerts on its waterfront lawn, drawing locals and visitors for live music under the stars — check the schedule in advance as these sell out. Kayakers and paddleboarders can launch from the shoreline for calm-water exploration of Biscayne Bay.
There is no camping at The Barnacle. The best time to visit is November through April, when Miami’s humidity eases and the mosquito pressure drops. Plan about two hours for the full experience.
