This 13-mile paved loop road cuts through BLM’s Wild Rivers Recreation Area within the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument in northern New Mexico. The byway follows the rim of the Rio Grande Gorge, offering dramatic views where the Red River meets the Rio Grande some 800 feet below.

The recreation area provides developed campgrounds with designated sites along the rim, plus backcountry camping opportunities for those willing to hike down into the gorge. Several trails descend to the river, ranging from moderate to strenuous, with primitive camping available at river level. Horse camping facilities accommodate equestrian visitors exploring the area’s trail network.

The low-speed, two-lane road is accessible to most vehicles and makes an excellent day trip for wildlife viewing, birding, and photography. Picnic areas dot the route for those not staying overnight.

Spring and fall bring ideal temperatures for hiking into the gorge, while summer mornings work best before afternoon heat sets in. Winter access depends on snow conditions. The byway is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
