Perquimans Crossing
North Carolina
Winding through the quiet heart of northeastern North Carolina, Perquimans Crossing invites travelers into a landscape where centuries of history meet the unhurried beauty of the Albemarle region. This state-designated scenic byway traces a path through rolling farmland, ancient cypress swamps, and the charming streets of Hertford, one of the oldest towns in the state.
Along the route, expect sweeping views of the Perquimans River, where morning mist rises from still waters lined with moss-draped trees. Stop at the historic Newbold-White House, a 1730 brick dwelling considered one of North Carolina’s oldest surviving homes. The byway passes through small communities where roadside produce stands and weathered tobacco barns speak to generations of agricultural life.
Birdwatchers will find plenty to admire — great blue herons, ospreys, and migrating waterfowl frequent the surrounding wetlands. The flat terrain and gentle curves make this an easy, relaxing drive suited to any skill level.
Visit in spring when wildflowers brighten the roadsides, or in autumn when golden light transforms the countryside. Allow one to two hours to drive the route at a leisurely pace, with extra time for stops. Perquimans Crossing rewards those who slow down and look closely.
