Roanoke Marshes Light
North Carolina
Standing watch over Croatan Sound in North Carolina, Roanoke Marshes Light has guided mariners since 1831. The current structure is a faithful replica of the screw-pile cottage-style lighthouse that once marked these shallow, treacherous waters — a design distinctive to the sounds of North Carolina. The light remains active as a navigational aid.
The lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing, but its waterfront setting on the Manteo boardwalk makes it one of the most photographed landmarks on the Outer Banks. Golden hour and blue hour offer the best lighting conditions, with stunning reflections off the sound. Nearby, visitors can explore Roanoke Island Festival Park and the historic town of Manteo.
