Standing in the York River near Yorktown, Virginia, Tue Marshes Light was built in 1875 as a screwpile lighthouse to guide vessels through the challenging shallows. The light served mariners for decades before being decommissioned. Its distinctive hexagonal cottage-style design, perched above the water on iron pilings, makes it a notable example of Chesapeake Bay screwpile architecture.

The lighthouse is not open to the public and cannot be climbed, but it’s easily photographed from shore or by boat. Golden hour provides the best light, especially from the Yorktown waterfront.
