Jockey’s Ridge State Park is home to the tallest active sand dune system on the Atlantic coast, rising roughly 80 feet above the Outer Banks landscape near Nags Head. Established in 1975 after local residents fought to protect the dunes from development, this 427-acre park offers one of the most unusual natural environments on the East Coast.

The star attraction is the dune itself — a massive, shifting expanse of sand shaped by ocean and sound-side winds. Climbing to the summit rewards visitors with panoramic views of both Roanoke Sound to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, especially striking at sunset when the sky lights up over Pamlico Sound. The barren, wind-sculpted terrain feels more like the Sahara than the Carolina coast.

Hang gliding is the park’s signature activity, with consistent winds and soft sand landings making it one of the best beginner spots in the country. Lessons are available from local outfitters just outside the park entrance. Beyond hang gliding, visitors enjoy sandboarding down the dune face, hiking the 1.5-mile Tracks in the Sand trail, and exploring the soundside boardwalk and wetland areas where wildlife and maritime forest meet the dunes.

Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions — summer heat radiates intensely off the sand, and shoes are essential (the sand can exceed 100°F). Winter visits are quieter but windy.

Admission is free. Plan for one to three hours depending on how long the views hold you at the top.
