Rising from the waters of Croatan Sound in North Carolina, this screwpile lighthouse was built in 1863 during the Civil War to guide vessels through the shallow, treacherous sound. The light served mariners navigating between Roanoke Island and the mainland for decades before being deactivated. Notable as one of the few remaining examples of a Croatan Sound navigational aid from the Civil War era, the structure is no longer active and is not open to the public. Visitors cannot climb the tower. The best photography conditions come during golden hour, when the sound’s calm waters create stunning reflections.
