The Mount Charleston/Lee Canyon Road follows State Route 156 through the Spring Mountains northwest of Las Vegas, climbing from the Mojave Desert floor into subalpine forest in one of the most dramatic elevation transitions accessible by car in the American West. Within thirty minutes of the Las Vegas Strip, the road reaches elevations above 8,000 feet where the temperature drops thirty degrees or more.

The Spring Mountains rise as a forested island above the surrounding desert, supporting plant and animal communities more typical of the Pacific Northwest than the Mojave. Bristlecone pines, some over 3,000 years old, grow on the highest ridges, while ponderosa pine, white fir, and aspen fill the canyons. The endemic Palmer’s chipmunk and several butterfly species found nowhere else on Earth inhabit these mountain forests.

Lee Canyon serves as southern Nevada‘s only ski area during winter months, offering downhill skiing and snowboarding within sight of the desert valley below. During summer, the area transforms into a hiking and mountain biking destination, with trails leading through wildflower meadows and along limestone cliffs to Mount Charleston’s 11,916-foot summit.

The drive is spectacular year-round. Spring brings wildflowers to the lower slopes, summer offers escape from valley heat, fall delivers golden aspen groves, and winter provides snow-covered mountain scenery. The road is maintained year-round, though chains may be required during winter storms. Cathedral Rock Picnic Area and other developed sites provide stopping points along the route.
