Baker Road Scenic Byway

Stretching 18.7 miles through eastern Nevada, Baker Road delivers a quiet, striking journey into some of the state’s most underappreciated landscapes. This State Scenic Byway traces a path toward the edge of Great Basin National Park, where the Snake Range rises sharply from the desert floor, its peaks often dusted with snow well into spring.

Along the drive, expect wide-open sagebrush valleys framed by rugged mountain ridges, with views that seem to stretch into Utah. The road passes through sparse, high-desert terrain where pronghorn antelope graze and raptors circle overhead. As you approach Baker, the tiny gateway community to the national park, the landscape begins to shift — juniper and pinyon pine creep in, hinting at the alpine world waiting above.

Key stops include pulloffs with sweeping basin-and-range panoramas and the small settlement of Baker itself, where you can fuel up before heading into the park to explore Lehman Caves or hike to Wheeler Peak.

Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the drive, longer if you stop for photos. Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions, with wildflowers in June and golden light painting the mountains through September and October.
