Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park
Tucked just north of the Las Vegas Strip, Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort preserves the oldest non-Native American structure in Nevada — a remnant of the adobe fort built by Mormon missionaries in 1855. At just over three acres, this compact state historic site punches well above its size, offering a surprisingly quiet window into the desert settlement story that predates the neon and casino era by nearly a century.
The centerpiece is the original adobe remnant, carefully stabilized and interpreted with period furnishings and informational displays. A reconstructed portion of the fort gives visitors a tangible sense of how those early settlers lived along Las Vegas Creek, farming in the Mojave heat and trading with Southern Paiute communities. The visitor center houses rotating exhibits, artifacts recovered from archaeological digs on-site, and a short orientation film that grounds the experience in regional history.
This is a walking-and-learning destination rather than an adventure outing. Plan about an hour to explore the grounds, read the interpretive panels, and browse the small museum. It works well as a morning stop before the heat builds, especially from October through April when temperatures are comfortable for outdoor exploration. Summer visits are doable but best tackled early in the day.
There are no camping facilities on-site. The park sits in an urban neighborhood, so lodging and dining options are minutes away in every direction.
For anyone curious about what Las Vegas looked like before the lights, this little fort tells the story.
