Turkey Point Light
Chesapeake Bay · Maryland
Perched atop dramatic 100-foot bluffs overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, Turkey Point Light has guided mariners since 1833. This 35-foot stone tower at the confluence of the Elk and Northeast Rivers is notable for being one of the last U.S. lighthouses staffed by a female keeper — Fannie Salter served from 1925 to 1947. Though decommissioned and closed to climbing, the lighthouse remains a rewarding destination. The surrounding Elk Neck State Park offers stunning views of the bluffs and bay. Visit during golden hour for the best photography, when warm light illuminates the whitewashed tower against the water. Nearby, explore the park’s trails, beaches, and the charming town of North East for antiques and dining.
