Rising from a treacherous reef in Long Island Sound, Race Rock Light has guided mariners since 1879. Its construction was an engineering marvel — workers spent seven years building an artificial island foundation atop submerged rocks swept by powerful tidal currents, a feat that claimed several lives. The granite Victorian Gothic tower and keeper’s dwelling sit dramatically surrounded by open water, making it one of the most photogenic lighthouses in the Northeast.

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation but is not open to the public. Best photography conditions come during golden hour from the Fishers Island Ferry or charter boats out of New London, Connecticut.
