North Dumpling Light
Near Fishers Island · New York
Perched on tiny North Dumpling Island in Long Island Sound, this charming lighthouse has guided mariners since 1849. The original stone tower was replaced with the current structure, which remains an active aid to navigation maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.
What makes North Dumpling truly unique is its famous private owner, Dean Kamen (inventor of the Segway), who playfully “seceded” the island from the United States in the 1990s. The lighthouse and island are privately owned and not open to the public.
Photographers get the best shots from the water during golden hour, particularly from Orient Point or aboard local ferries. Nearby, visitors can explore Orient Beach State Park, Plum Island, and the charming village of Greenport.
