Hog Island Shoal Light

Hog Island Shoal Light

Narragansett Bay · Rhode Island

Rising from the waters of Narragansett Bay near Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Hog Island Shoal Light has guided mariners since 1901. This distinctive sparkplug-style lighthouse stands on a concrete caisson foundation, marking the dangerous shoals between Hog Island and the bay’s main shipping channel.

The cast-iron tower features the classic conical design typical of early 20th-century offshore lights and remains an active aid to navigation today. While the lighthouse is not open to public access, it offers excellent photography opportunities from the water—best captured during golden hour or from kayaks and boat tours operating in the bay.

Nearby attractions include Prudence Island, Bristol Harbor, and the historic mansions of Newport just minutes south.
