Ojito Wilderness Area offers rugged desert terrain managed by the Bureau of Land Management in northern New Mexico. The landscape features steep-sided mesas, deep arroyos, colorful badlands, and distinctive hoodoo formations carved from layers of shale, sandstone, and limestone. Scattered piñon and juniper woodlands provide occasional shade across the otherwise open terrain.

Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the wilderness, allowing visitors to set up camp in primitive, undeveloped settings. No permits are required, but there are no facilities—pack in all water and supplies, and practice Leave No Trace principles. The area sees light visitation, making it ideal for solitude seekers.

Hiking trails wind through the canyons and across mesa tops, with opportunities for photography among the unusual rock formations. Horseback riding is also permitted on designated routes. Access roads are unpaved and may require high-clearance vehicles, especially after rain.

Spring and fall provide the most comfortable conditions for camping and hiking. Summer brings intense heat with limited shade, while winter can see cold nights and occasional snow. Check road conditions with the BLM Rio Puerco Field Office before visiting.
