Perched on the southeastern tip of Bear Island in Maine’s Cranberry Isles, this historic lighthouse has guided mariners through Acadia’s waters since 1839. The original brick tower was replaced in 1889 with a distinctive squat granite structure that remains today, though the light was deactivated in 1981.

While the lighthouse is privately owned and not open to visitors, it makes a stunning photography subject from the water. Charter a boat from Northeast Harbor for the best views, with golden hour on summer evenings providing ideal lighting conditions.

The lighthouse sits within view of Acadia National Park, making it easy to combine with visits to the park’s hiking trails, carriage roads, and the iconic Bass Harbor Head Light.
