Dark Sky Reserve

Located in southern Florida, Big Cypress National Preserve earned its International Dark Sky Reserve designation in 2016, offering astronomers exceptional viewing conditions above its vast subtropical wilderness. The preserve’s remote wetlands provide naturally dark skies free from urban light pollution.

Stargazing Conditions & Visibility
Clear nights reveal the Milky Way in stunning detail, along with deep-sky objects including the Orion Nebula, Andromeda Galaxy, and numerous star clusters. The southern latitude allows glimpses of constellations not visible from northern states.

Best Viewing Times
Winter months (December through March) offer optimal conditions with lower humidity, fewer mosquitoes, and earlier darkness. Prime viewing occurs between 10 PM and 2 AM when skies reach maximum darkness.

Equipment & Facilities
Bring binoculars or telescopes for deep-sky observation. The preserve offers dispersed camping and designated viewing areas. A red flashlight preserves night vision.

Programs
Rangers host periodic stargazing programs and astronomy events. Check the preserve’s calendar for scheduled night sky activities featuring telescope viewing and constellation tours led by knowledgeable staff.
