Grand Haven South Pierhead Inner Light

Standing guard at the entrance to Grand Haven’s harbor since 1839, the South Pierhead Inner Light is one of Michigan’s most photographed landmarks. Connected to the outer light by a steel catwalk, this striking red lighthouse anchors the end of a long pier that juts into Lake Michigan. Though the tower remains an active navigational aid and is not open to public climbing, visitors can walk the pier for close-up views. Sunset is the ideal time for photography, when the light glows against dramatic Lake Michigan skies. Nearby, explore Grand Haven State Park’s sandy beaches, the downtown boardwalk, and the famous Musical Fountain — the world’s largest musical fountain — just across the channel.
