Big Sable Point Light

Rising from the windswept dunes north of Ludington, Michigan, Big Sable Point Light has guided mariners along Lake Michigan’s eastern shore since 1867. Originally built with a yellow brick tower, the lighthouse was later encased in iron plates and painted with its distinctive black-and-white bands to prevent weather damage. The light remains active today under Coast Guard operation. While the tower is not open to public climbing, visitors can hike the 1.8-mile trail through Ludington State Park to view it up close. Golden hour before sunset offers the best photography, with the lighthouse silhouetted against Lake Michigan.
