Paukaa Point Light
Perched along Hawaii’s rugged Hamakua Coast, Paukaa Point Light has guided mariners since 1925. This active navigational aid marks the rocky shoreline north of Hilo, where volcanic cliffs meet the Pacific. The modest concrete tower replaced earlier wooden structures that succumbed to the harsh coastal elements. While the lighthouse is not open to the public and visitors cannot climb the tower, it remains a worthwhile stop for photographers. Early morning offers the best light, when golden sun illuminates the tower against dramatic ocean backdrops. Nearby, the scenic Pepe’ekeo Four-Mile Drive winds through lush tropical landscape, and Onomea Bay’s botanical gardens provide excellent hiking. Downtown Hilo’s farmers market sits just minutes south.
