Cape Kumukahi Light stands at the easternmost point of the Big Island of Hawaii, near Hilo. Built in 1929, this active lighthouse guides vessels along the rugged Puna coastline. The original tower was remarkably spared during a 1960 lava flow that destroyed surrounding structures—molten rock split and flowed around it, leaving the lighthouse untouched. A modern automated light replaced the original structure, sitting atop a simple steel framework. The lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing, but visitors can walk to the cape for stunning views.
