Paris Mountain State Park
South Carolina (Greenville County)
Rising above the Greenville skyline, Paris Mountain State Park offers 1,540 acres of forested ridgelines and quiet valleys just minutes from downtown. The park sits on the eastern flank of Paris Mountain, one of the Blue Ridge foothills, giving visitors a surprising sense of wilderness without a long drive.
The park’s centerpiece is Lake Placid, a nine-acre lake built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. A paved trail loops the shoreline — flat, shaded, and perfect for families with strollers or anyone wanting an easy walk. For a real workout, the Sulphur Springs Trail climbs steeply through hardwood forest to the mountain’s upper ridges, connecting to a network of singletrack that mountain bikers and trail runners prize. In total, the park maintains roughly 15 miles of trails ranging from gentle lakeside paths to rocky, rooted ascents.
Swimming is available at the lake beach during summer months, and the fishing is decent for bream and bass. Picnic shelters dot the lakeshore, making it a go-to spot for Greenville families on weekends.
Camping options include both tent and RV sites tucked into the woods, though the campground is relatively small — reserving ahead is wise, especially from April through October.
Spring brings mountain laurel blooms and comfortable temperatures. Fall color peaks in late October and draws steady crowds. Summer is hot and humid but the forest canopy keeps trails manageable. Winter is mild enough for year-round hiking.
Paris Mountain works equally well as a half-day escape from Greenville or an overnight camping trip with real trail mileage to cover.
