Burlingame State Park
Rhode Island (Washington County)
Burlingame State Park spans 3,100 acres across Washington County in southern Rhode Island, anchored by the pristine waters of Watchaug Pond. This is one of New England’s largest state parks, and the sheer scale of it means you can spend a full weekend here without running out of ground to cover.
The centerpiece is Watchaug Pond, a freshwater lake ideal for swimming, kayaking, and fishing for largemouth bass and pickerel. A designated swimming area with a sandy beach makes it one of the better family swim spots in the state. Beyond the water, miles of trails wind through pitch pine and oak forest, connecting to the broader Vin Gormley Trail and the North South Trail, Rhode Island’s longest hiking path.
Burlingame’s campground is among the most popular in Rhode Island, offering over 700 campsites spread across wooded loops. Sites accommodate tents and RVs, and the campground fills quickly on summer weekends — reservations are strongly recommended from June through August. Facilities include restrooms, showers, and a camp store.
Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. The surrounding Burlingame Wildlife Management Area adds thousands of additional acres of protected habitat, drawing warblers, osprey, and the occasional bald eagle. Hunting is permitted in the management area during season.
Visit between late May and mid-October for the best experience. Summer brings warm pond water and full campground amenities, while early fall offers quieter trails and foliage reflected off the pond. Spring can be muddy but rewards with wildflowers and migrating songbirds.
