Bucktail State Park Natural Area
Pennsylvania (Cameron and Clinton Counties County)
Stretching across more than 21,000 acres of rugged Appalachian terrain in Cameron and Clinton Counties, Bucktail State Park Natural Area is one of Pennsylvania’s most untamed landscapes. Established in 1933, this vast natural area follows the Sinnemahoning Creek corridor along Route 120—a scenic drive so striking it earned designation as one of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful routes.
Unlike traditional state parks with manicured facilities, Bucktail is classified as a Natural Area, meaning the forest remains largely wild and undeveloped. That’s its greatest appeal. Towering stands of oak, cherry, and hemlock blanket the steep mountain slopes, creating a canopy that explodes with color each autumn. The fall foliage drive through Bucktail ranks among the finest in the eastern United States, typically peaking in mid-October.
Wildlife viewing is exceptional here. The park takes its name from the Bucktail Regiment of the Civil War, but today the name fits for another reason—white-tailed deer are abundant, along with black bear, wild turkey, and the occasional bald eagle fishing the creek. Birders will find warblers and thrushes throughout the spring migration.
Hiking trails wind through old-growth sections and along ridgelines offering panoramic valley views. Fishing in Sinnemahoning Creek yields native brook trout in the upper reaches. Hunting is permitted in season across much of the natural area.
Visit in October for peak foliage or late May for wildflowers and songbirds. Come prepared for solitude—this is deep Pennsylvania wilds, and that’s exactly the point.
