Blue Marsh State Park
Pennsylvania (Berks County County)
Blue Marsh State Park sprawls across nearly 2,000 acres in Berks County, Pennsylvania, anchored by the striking 1,150-acre Blue Marsh Lake. Built around an Army Corps of Engineers flood-control reservoir, the park has evolved into one of southeastern Pennsylvania’s most versatile outdoor destinations, drawing hikers, anglers, boaters, and mountain bikers year-round.
The park’s crown jewel is its 30-mile multi-use trail system that loops the entire lake, offering everything from easy lakeside strolls to rugged singletrack that mountain bikers travel from across the region to ride. The trails wind through mature hardwood forests, open meadows, and along rocky ridgelines with sweeping views of the lake below.
Water recreation dominates the warmer months. Blue Marsh Lake supports motorboating, sailing, kayaking, and swimming at a designated beach area with lifeguards during summer. Anglers target largemouth bass, walleye, muskellunge, and panfish throughout the lake’s coves and deeper channels. Winter brings cross-country skiing and ice fishing when conditions allow.
Birders will find productive territory here — the mix of forest, wetland, and open water habitats attracts bald eagles, osprey, and migrating waterfowl, particularly during spring and fall passages.
The best time to visit is late May through October for water activities, though autumn delivers spectacular foliage along the lake trail. Spring wildflower displays in the wooded sections are worth the trip alone.
Blue Marsh proves that you don’t need to drive to the Poconos for a genuine outdoor experience in Pennsylvania — Berks County delivers.
