Perched on the northern shore of Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon, Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site offers one of the Central Coast’s most rewarding stops for history lovers and coastal explorers alike. The park’s centerpiece is the 1871 Yaquina Bay Lighthouse — the oldest wooden lighthouse on the Oregon coast and the only one with the keeper’s quarters still attached. Restored and open for tours, it anchors the site with a tangible connection to Oregon’s maritime past.

Beyond the lighthouse, the recreation site delivers sweeping views of Yaquina Bay, the iconic Yaquina Bay Bridge, and the open Pacific. A network of short trails winds through coastal forest and emerges at rocky tide pools and a sandy beach, making it easy to spend an hour or an entire afternoon. Birdwatchers will find harbor seals, brown pelicans, and migrating gray whales (December through March) within view, while beachcombers can explore the shoreline at low tide for agate and shells.

This is a day-use site — no camping is available here — but full-service campgrounds at nearby South Beach State Park and Beverly Beach State Park are just minutes away. Picnic areas with sheltered tables make it a solid lunch stop on a coastal road trip.

Visit between June and September for the driest weather and clearest views, though the lighthouse and bay views are dramatic year-round, especially during winter storms. Admission to the grounds is free; lighthouse tours are donation-based. Dogs are welcome on leash.
