Saddle Mountain State Natural Area rises dramatically from Oregon’s North Coast, its distinctive saddle-shaped summit reaching 3,283 feet — the highest point in the northern Coast Range. The steep, switchback-laden trail to the top rewards hikers with one of the most spectacular panoramas in the state, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Cascade volcanoes on clear days.

The 2.5-mile summit trail gains roughly 1,600 feet of elevation, making it a moderately challenging out-and-back hike that most fit hikers complete in 3–4 hours. The final approach narrows along an exposed ridge with cable handrails bolted into rock — thrilling for some, nerve-testing for others. Wildflower enthusiasts will find the meadows along the upper trail especially rewarding in late May through July, when rare species like Saddle Mountain saxifrage and bittercress bloom in profusion. The area’s unique geology — ancient volcanic basalt — supports several plant species found nowhere else in Oregon.

There is no camping at Saddle Mountain itself, though nearby options include the campgrounds at Nehalem Bay State Park and Oswald West State Park, both within a 30-minute drive along the coast. A small day-use parking area and picnic facilities sit at the trailhead, accessible via a winding 7-mile spur road off Highway 26.

The best window for visiting runs from late May through October, when the access road is reliably open and fog lifts enough to reveal the views that make the climb worthwhile. Arrive early on summer weekends — the small parking lot fills fast.
