Nehalem Bay State Park
Oregon (North Coast County)
Nehalem Bay State Park sits on a sandy spit separating Nehalem Bay from the Pacific Ocean along Oregon’s North Coast. The park occupies a narrow peninsula that gives campers and day visitors something rare — water access on two sides, with bay shores to the east and open ocean beach to the west.
The beach here stretches for miles, wide and windswept, ideal for beachcombing, kite flying, and horseback riding. An equestrian camp makes this one of the few Oregon coast parks where riders can stable their horses and hit the sand directly. The bay side offers quieter water for kayaking, crabbing, and fishing, particularly during Dungeness crab season from December through summer.
The campground loops through low-growing shore pines and coastal scrub, with 265 electrical sites, a hiker/biker camp, a fly-in airstrip for small aircraft, and yurts for those who prefer a roof overhead. Sites are well-spaced and shielded by vegetation, though ocean wind is a constant companion. Bring sturdy tent stakes.
A paved bike path connects the park to the nearby village of Nehalem, where you’ll find local restaurants and small shops worth the ride.
Summer brings the warmest weather and biggest crowds. September and early October offer the sweet spot — milder temperatures, thinner crowds, and reliable crabbing. Winter storms draw storm-watchers but demand preparation for heavy rain and wind.
Come for the unusual two-shore geography. Stay for the crabbing, the riding, and the long, empty beach walks.
