Tillamook Rock Light

Tillamook Rock Light

Tillamook Head · Oregon

Perched on a basalt rock island 1.2 miles offshore from Tillamook Head, this lighthouse was commissioned in 1881 after one of the most harrowing construction efforts in American lighthouse history. Fierce storms and brutal seas earned it the nickname “Terrible Tilly.” Decommissioned in 1957, it was later converted into a columbarium for cremated remains. The lighthouse is not open to the public, and visitors cannot climb the tower. Best photography opportunities come from Tillamook Head Trail or Ecola State Park, particularly during winter storms or at golden hour. Nearby attractions include Cannon Beach, Haystack Rock, and the charming seaside town of Seaside, all within a short drive.
