Hug Point State Recreation Site
Oregon (North Coast County)
Hug Point State Recreation Site sits along Oregon’s North Coast, just south of Cannon Beach, where dramatic basalt cliffs meet wide sandy shores. The name comes from the old stagecoach route that once hugged these cliffs at low tide—remnants of that carved roadbed are still visible in the rock, offering a tangible connection to coastal history.
The real draw here is the waterfall. A small creek cascades directly onto the beach over a mossy rock face, creating one of the most photographed spots on the Oregon Coast. At low tide, the beach opens up to reveal tide pools teeming with sea stars, anemones, and small crabs, plus several shallow sea caves carved into the headland that are perfect for exploring.
Beachcombing, photography, and tide pool exploration are the primary activities. The beach is sheltered enough for picnicking, and the short trail from the parking area makes it accessible for families. Surfing and boogie boarding happen here too, though the waves are modest compared to nearby breaks.
There is no camping at Hug Point itself, but several campgrounds sit within a short drive, including Oswald West State Park just to the south.
Timing matters. Visit at low tide to access the caves, waterfall base, and historic road. Summer brings the most reliable weather, but fall and winter deliver powerful storm-watching opportunities with fewer crowds. Check tide charts before you go—high tide pushes the ocean right against the cliffs, closing off the best features.
