Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint sits on a dramatic basalt headland along Oregon’s central coast, just north of Depoe Bay. This roadside gem off U.S. Route 101 delivers one of the most striking ocean panoramas on the Oregon Coast — a sweeping view of rocky shoreline, crashing surf, and offshore sea stacks that rewards even a brief stop.

The viewpoint perches above a rugged cove where Rocky Creek meets the Pacific. Below the overlook, waves funnel through narrow channels carved into the basalt, sending spray skyward during incoming tides and winter storms. Gray whale migration season (December through June) makes this a reliable spot for whale watching without the crowds that gather at nearby Depoe Bay. Bring binoculars — you’ll also spot cormorants, brown pelicans, and the occasional bald eagle riding thermals along the cliff face.

A short trail leads from the parking area to the overlook, and picnic tables are tucked among wind-sculpted shore pines for a lunch stop with a view. The site is day-use only with no camping facilities, but Beverly Beach State Park and Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area both offer full campgrounds within a short drive.

Visit in late spring through early fall for the calmest weather, though storm-watching from October through March draws its own devoted following. Fog can roll in quickly, so layer up even in summer. There are no fees and no reservations needed — just pull off the highway and take it in.
