Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint
Oregon (Central Coast County)
Perched on a dramatic basalt headland along Oregon’s central coast, Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint delivers one of the most striking panoramas on the entire Pacific seaboard. From the viewing platform at Cape Foulweather — named by Captain James Cook during a stormy 1778 encounter — visitors look out over churning surf, rocky sea stacks, and the sweeping arc of coastline stretching from Depoe Bay to Otter Rock.
The real draw here is the view itself. On clear days, you can spot gray whales migrating offshore from December through June, making this one of the coast’s most accessible whale-watching perches. Harbor seals and sea lions haul out on the rocks below, and bald eagles ride the updrafts along the cliff face. Bring binoculars — the wildlife viewing rewards patience.
The viewpoint sits just off the Otter Crest Loop, a winding scenic detour from Highway 101 that passes through old-growth Sitka spruce forest before opening to the headland. A small parking area and short paved path make the overlook accessible for most visitors, including families with strollers. There are no camping facilities on-site, but Beverly Beach State Park is just minutes south with full hookups and yurt rentals.
Visit in winter for peak storm-watching and whale migration, or come in late summer when fog lifts by midmorning and temperatures hover in the mid-60s. Either way, layer up — the 500-foot elevation and ocean winds keep things brisk year-round.
