Manhattan Beach State Recreation Site

Tucked along Oregon’s North Coast between Rockaway Beach and Nehalem, Manhattan Beach State Recreation Site is one of those quiet stretches of shoreline that locals hope visitors never discover. A short, forested trail winds through coastal Sitka spruce before opening onto a wide, uncrowded sandy beach — the kind of reveal that makes you pause mid-step.

This is a day-use site, so there’s no camping here, but that’s part of its charm. Without campground crowds, Manhattan Beach stays peaceful even on summer weekends when neighboring beaches fill up. The parking area is small and easy to miss from Highway 101, which keeps foot traffic low and the tideline clean.

Beachcombing is the main draw. Agates, jasper, and interesting driftwood show up regularly, especially after winter storms push fresh finds ashore. The beach stretches far enough in both directions for a solid walk — head south toward Rockaway Beach or north toward the Nehalem Bay area. Birdwatching is productive year-round, with shorebirds, gulls, and the occasional bald eagle overhead.

Visit between June and September for the driest weather and longest days, but late fall through early spring delivers the best storm-watching and beachcombing. Dress in layers regardless of season — coastal winds pick up without warning.

There are no restrooms, picnic shelters, or services on-site, so plan accordingly. Bring what you need and pack it out. For overnight stays, Nehalem Bay State Park is just a few miles south and offers full-service camping with ocean access.
