Gleneden Beach State Recreation Site
Oregon (Central Coast County)
Gleneden Beach State Recreation Site sits along Oregon’s Central Coast, offering a quieter alternative to the busier beach towns nearby. Tucked between Lincoln City and Depoe Bay, this small day-use area provides direct access to a wide, sandy beach framed by weathered basalt outcroppings and driftwood.
The beach here is known for excellent tidepooling at low tide, where visitors can spot sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs clinging to exposed rock shelves. Beachcombing is rewarding year-round, with agates, jasper, and the occasional glass float turning up after winter storms. The flat, firm sand makes for easy walking, and dogs are welcome on-leash.
Surfcasting for perch is popular from the beach, and whale watching peaks during the gray whale migration in December through January and again in late March. The sheltered cove catches less wind than open stretches to the north, making it a comfortable spot for picnicking and kite flying even on breezy days.
There is no camping at Gleneden Beach itself, but nearby options abound — Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area in Lincoln City offers both tent and RV sites just minutes north.
Summer brings the warmest weather and biggest crowds, but the shoulder months of May and September offer mild temperatures with fewer visitors. Winter storms draw their own audience of wave watchers and storm photographers.
Expect a small parking area with limited facilities. Arrive early on summer weekends to secure a spot, and always check tide charts before exploring the rocks.
