Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area sits along Oregon’s central coast between Lincoln City and Depoe Bay, where Fogarty Creek cuts through a wooded ravine before spilling onto a dramatic stretch of beach. The creek carves a natural pathway under Highway 101, leading visitors from a shaded, fern-lined trail to a wide sandy beach framed by rugged basalt headlands on both sides.

What makes Fogarty Creek stand out is the combination of sheltered forest and exposed coastline packed into one compact stop. The creek itself is shallow enough for kids to wade and splash, while the beach opens up to tide pools tucked into the rocky outcrops at either end. At low tide, you can explore anemones, sea stars, and small crabs in the pools along the headlands. The bluffs above provide excellent whale watching, particularly during gray whale migration in late December through January and again in March through June.

This is a day-use area — no camping is available here. Picnic tables sit beneath a canopy of Sitka spruce and shore pine, making it one of the more pleasant lunch stops along the coast. Restrooms are available in the parking area off Highway 101.

Summer brings the warmest weather and biggest crowds, but spring and fall deliver dramatic storm watching and fewer visitors. Winter swells send spectacular waves crashing against the headlands. Dress in layers year-round — coastal fog and wind are constants even in July.

A reliable, underrated stop that rewards a short walk with a genuinely beautiful stretch of Oregon coast.
