Cape Lookout State Park occupies a striking headland on Oregon’s Tillamook Coast, where a narrow finger of basalt extends nearly two miles into the Pacific Ocean. The cape trail is the main draw — a 5-mile out-and-back hike through old-growth Sitka spruce and western hemlock that ends at a cliff-edge viewpoint 400 feet above the surf. During gray whale migration season (late December through June), this is one of the best whale-watching spots on the entire Oregon coast.

Beyond the cape trail, the park spreads across a sand spit between Netarts Bay and the ocean. Miles of uncrowded beach stretch in both directions, backed by low dunes and coastal forest. Beachcombing turns up agates after winter storms, and Netarts Bay offers calm-water kayaking and some of the best clamming on the north coast.

The campground sits in a sheltered forest just behind the dunes, with 170 tent sites, 38 full-hookup RV sites, 13 yurts, and 6 cabins. Reservations fill fast for summer weekends, so book early through Oregon State Parks. Even in shoulder season, the yurts and cabins make a comfortable base when coastal weather turns rough.

Visit between March and October for the best trail conditions and whale sightings. Expect fog and wind year-round — layering is non-negotiable. Summer highs hover around 65°F, which keeps the crowds lighter than you might expect for a park this beautiful. Bring binoculars for the cape trail. You will use them.
