Run Hill State Natural Area

Tucked along the coast of North Carolina, Run Hill State Natural Area has been quietly rewarding visitors since its designation in 1995. This coastal natural area preserves one of the state’s increasingly rare maritime landscapes — a place where rolling sand dunes meet maritime forest, creating a terrain that feels wild and untouched even as development presses in around it.

What sets Run Hill apart is its striking topography. The site features some of the tallest natural sand dunes on the Outer Banks, offering panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and sound. The dune ridges give way to patches of live oak and maritime shrub thicket, forming a textured landscape that shifts noticeably with the seasons.

Hiking is the main draw here. Trails wind through the dune fields and into shaded forest corridors, making for varied terrain that rewards exploration without demanding a full-day commitment. Birdwatchers will find the transitional habitat productive, particularly during spring and fall migration. Photography opportunities are excellent — the interplay of dune grass, weathered oaks, and open sky creates compositions you won’t find at more manicured parks.

The best window for visiting is late spring through early fall, when the coastal weather is most cooperative and the vegetation is at its fullest. Fall brings fewer crowds and cooler hiking conditions.
