Sampson State Park sits on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, the deepest of New York’s Finger Lakes. Spread across 2,070 acres of former naval training grounds, the park has been welcoming visitors since 1960, transforming its military past into one of the region’s most versatile outdoor destinations.

The park’s defining feature is its extensive Seneca Lake waterfront. A large swimming beach draws families throughout summer, while the full-service marina accommodates boaters exploring the lake’s 38-mile length. Fishing here is excellent — Seneca Lake supports lake trout, rainbow trout, and landlocked salmon, with shore fishing and boat launches readily available.

Sampson offers one of the largest campgrounds in the New York State Park system, with over 240 electric sites and a separate area for RVs. Sites are spread across open, grassy loops — shade can be limited, so bring a canopy if you’re visiting in July or August. Hot showers, a camp store, and playgrounds keep things comfortable for extended stays.

Beyond the water, a network of trails crosses the park’s interior, and the Sampson Military Museum preserves the site’s history as a World War II Naval Training Station and later Air Force base. It’s a surprisingly fascinating stop.

The best time to visit is late June through early September, when the lake is warm enough for swimming and the Finger Lakes wine trail is in full swing just minutes away. Weekdays offer noticeably quieter campsites than the busy summer weekends.
