Cayuga Lake State Park
New York (Finger Lakes County)
Cayuga Lake State Park
Sitting at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake — the longest of New York’s Finger Lakes — this 141-acre state park has welcomed visitors since 1927. The park occupies a prime stretch of shoreline where the lake narrows into a shallow, sun-warmed swimming area that families have loved for nearly a century.
The real draw here is the water. Cayuga Lake’s south end stays calmer and warmer than the deep central basin, making it one of the better swimming spots in the Finger Lakes region. A maintained beach area gives you direct lake access without fighting boat traffic. Beyond the shore, the park offers hiking trails through mixed hardwood forest, fishing along the lakeshore (Cayuga is known for lake trout and smallmouth bass), and picnic areas with views across the water.
The park sits in the heart of Finger Lakes wine country. After a morning hike, you’re a short drive from dozens of tasting rooms along the Cayuga Wine Trail — one of America’s first organized wine trails. The town of Ithaca and its gorges are just minutes south.
Summer is peak season, with July and August bringing the warmest lake temperatures for swimming. Early fall offers fewer crowds and spectacular foliage reflecting off the lake surface. Spring can be muddy but quiet.
Expect a well-maintained park with a classic Northeast state park feel — not wilderness, but a solid home base for exploring one of New York’s most scenic lake regions.
