Rock Island Lighthouse State Park
New York (Thousand Islands County)
About This Park
This recreation area is part of Center Hill Lake
Perched on the western tip of a small island in the St. Lawrence River, Rock Island Lighthouse State Park packs remarkable history into its 4.0 acres. Established in 1976, this tiny state park preserves one of the Thousand Islands region’s most photogenic landmarks — a stone lighthouse that guided river traffic beginning in 1847, with the current structure dating to 1882.
What makes Rock Island special is its accessibility-meets-remoteness combination. You can only reach it by boat, giving every visit the feel of a small adventure. Once you step onto the dock, the entire island is yours to explore in an afternoon. The restored lighthouse and keeper’s quarters offer a window into 19th-century life on the river, when keepers maintained the light through brutal St. Lawrence winters.
Visitors come for the lighthouse tours, but they stay for the views. The surrounding waters of the Thousand Islands stretch out in every direction, dotted with granite outcroppings and pine-topped islands. Bring a picnic, a camera, and binoculars — birdwatching is excellent here, and the sunsets over the river are worth timing your departure around.
The park is best visited from late June through early September, when water taxi services run regularly from the mainland. Peak wildflower season in July adds color to the rocky shoreline. Come on a weekday if you want the island nearly to yourself.
Plan for a half-day trip. There are no overnight camping facilities on the island, so arrange your return transport in advance.
