Goosepond Mountain State Park
New York (Palisades County)
Goosepond Mountain State Park
Tucked into the rugged highlands of Palisades County, Goosepond Mountain State Park spreads across 1,706 acres of dense hardwood forest, rocky ridgelines, and quiet wetlands. Established in 1960, this park remains one of New York’s less-trafficked gems — a place where you can hike for an hour without seeing another person.
The park’s defining feature is its terrain. Rolling hills give way to exposed ridges with long views over the surrounding Hudson Highlands, and the namesake goose pond anchors the lower elevations with a marshy habitat that draws herons, waterfowl, and the occasional bald eagle. The trail network winds through oak and hickory stands, crossing seasonal streams and threading between mossy boulders — rewarding for hikers who prefer discovery over manicured paths.
Beyond hiking, the park supports mountain biking on its wider trails, bird watching around the wetland areas, and cross-country skiing when winter blankets the ridges. Hunters use designated sections during deer and turkey seasons, so check posted dates if you’re visiting in autumn.
Fall is the standout season here. The hardwood canopy ignites in October, and cooler temperatures make ridge hiking comfortable. Spring wildflower displays along the lower trails are worth the mud. Summer brings full leaf cover and humid conditions — start early to beat the heat.
Come prepared with sturdy footwear and water. Trails are minimally blazed in spots, and the rocky footing rewards attention. This is a park for people who like their nature a little untamed.
