Bethpage State Park
New York (Long Island County)
Bethpage State Park has been a Long Island landmark since 1934, sprawling across 1,477 acres of rolling terrain that feels worlds away from the New York City suburbs just 40 miles to the west. The park is best known for its five golf courses, including the legendary Black Course — a brutally challenging layout that has hosted multiple U.S. Open championships and regularly ranks among the top public courses in the country. Tee times here are coveted, and dedicated golfers have been known to camp out overnight at the clubhouse just to secure a round.
Beyond golf, Bethpage offers a surprisingly diverse network of multi-use trails winding through dense oak and hickory woodlands. Hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians share these paths, which connect to the larger Long Island trail system. In winter, the hills become popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow. The park also features picnic areas, tennis courts, and playing fields that stay busy through the warmer months.
Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions for trail use, with autumn foliage turning the hardwood forests into a patchwork of copper and gold. Summers draw the golf and picnic crowds, so expect company on weekends from May through September.
Camping availability has not been confirmed — check with New York State Parks before planning an overnight stay. What Bethpage lacks in backcountry solitude, it makes up for in accessibility: a genuine outdoor escape tucked into one of the most densely populated regions in the country.
