Heron Lake State Park sits along the shores of Heron Lake in Rio Arriba County, northern New Mexico, where 4,100 acres of high-desert terrain meet cool mountain waters at an elevation of roughly 7,200 feet. The lake itself stretches across 5,900 surface acres, fed by the San Juan-Chama Diversion Project, and is one of the few “quiet lakes” in New Mexico — motorboats are restricted to trolling speed only, making it a rare sanctuary for sailing, canoeing, and kayaking without the noise and wake of speedboats.

The calm waters make Heron Lake one of the state’s best destinations for trout and kokanee salmon fishing. Anglers work the lake year-round, including through the ice in winter. A 5.5-mile trail connects Heron Lake to neighboring El Vado Lake State Park, offering hikers views of ponderosa pine forests and the Brazos Cliffs in the distance.

Camping options range from developed sites with electric hookups near the lake’s edge to more primitive spots tucked into the surrounding juniper and pine. Several boat-in campsites along the western shore provide a backcountry feel without the long hike in.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when daytime temperatures hover in the 70s and 80s. Nights stay cool even in July, so bring layers. Winter visitors come for ice fishing and the stark beauty of snow over red rock.

Heron Lake rewards those who prefer their outdoor experiences quiet, uncrowded, and close to the water.
