Ramapo Mountain State Forest is a rugged, 4,269-acre wilderness tucked into the Ramapo Mountains of northern New Jersey, spanning parts of Bergen and Passaic counties. Despite sitting just 30 miles from Manhattan, it feels remarkably remote — a landscape of rocky ridgelines, glacial lakes, and dense hardwood forest that rewards hikers willing to earn their views.
The park’s crown jewel is Ramapo Lake, a serene glacial lake ringed by hemlocks and mountain laurel that makes for a stunning destination hike. The roughly 4-mile loop trail to the lake is the most popular route, winding through bouldered terrain with several overlooks along the way. For something more ambitious, the Castle Point Trail climbs to the ruins of a stone mansion built in the early 1900s by businessman William Porter — the crumbling walls and panoramic views from the hilltop make it one of the most atmospheric spots in the entire New Jersey trail system.
Beyond hiking, the forest draws rock climbers to its exposed ridgeline outcrops, mountain bikers to its network of fire roads and singletrack, and anglers to its stocked streams. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow. Swimming is not permitted at Ramapo Lake, but the scenery alone justifies the trek.
The best time to visit is mid-October, when the hardwood canopy erupts in fall color and the summer crowds thin out. Spring wildflower season (late April through May) is a quieter alternative. Weekday visits are recommended year-round, as trailhead parking fills quickly on weekends.
Expect uneven, rocky terrain on most trails — sturdy footwear is a must.
