Parvin State Park sits on 2,092 acres of pine-oak forest in Pittsgrove Township, Salem County — one of South Jersey’s quietest corners. Established in 1931 during the Civilian Conservation Corps era, the park preserves a landscape shaped by the sandy soils and cedar-stained waters characteristic of the outer coastal plain, offering a surprisingly wild escape just an hour from Philadelphia.
The centerpiece is Parvin Lake and the smaller Thundergust Lake, both surrounded by marked trails that wind through stands of Atlantic white cedar, pitch pine, and hardwood swamp. The 15-mile trail network ranges from easy lakeside strolls to longer loops through dense forest, making it well-suited for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. Fishing is popular on both lakes, with largemouth bass, pickerel, and sunfish drawing regulars year-round. In summer, the swimming beach on Parvin Lake fills up on weekends — arrive early to claim a spot.
Birders will find the park rewarding, particularly during spring migration when warblers move through the understory. The surrounding farmland and forest create edge habitat that supports a wide variety of species.
The best window for visiting runs from late April through October. Spring wildflowers carpet the forest floor, summer brings lake swimming, and fall foliage along the cedar swamps is quietly spectacular. Winters are peaceful but facilities are limited.
Parvin rewards those willing to venture into Salem County’s back roads — a genuine piece of South Jersey wilderness with none of the crowds found at the Shore.
