Rising 172 feet above the northern tip of Long Beach Island, Barnegat Lighthouse stands as one of New Jersey’s most iconic coastal landmarks. Known affectionately as “Old Barney,” this red-and-white sentinel has guided mariners past the treacherous shoals of Barnegat Inlet since 1859, and today anchors a compact 32-acre state park that punches well above its size.
Climb the 217 steps to the top of the lighthouse for panoramic views that sweep across Barnegat Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the barrier island stretching south. On clear days, you can spot the skyline of Atlantic City in the distance. At the base, a small maritime museum traces the lighthouse’s history and the dangerous waters that earned this stretch of coastline the nickname “Graveyard of the Atlantic.”
Beyond the lighthouse itself, a short nature trail winds along the jetty rocks at the island’s tip — prime territory for birdwatching, especially during fall migration when raptors, shorebirds, and songbirds funnel through in impressive numbers. Anglers cast from the rock jetty year-round, pulling in striped bass, bluefish, and fluke. The surrounding shoreline offers beachcombing and stunning sunset views over the bay.
The park does not offer camping, so plan your visit as a day trip. Late spring through early fall provides the best conditions for climbing the lighthouse, which closes seasonally. September and October combine comfortable weather with peak birding and thinner crowds.
Barnegat Lighthouse is a must-stop for anyone exploring the Jersey Shore beyond the boardwalks — equal parts history, nature, and unbeatable coastal scenery.
