Spanning over 37,000 acres in the heart of New Jersey’s Pine Barrens, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest is one of the state’s oldest protected lands, established in 1908 when it was originally known as Lebanon State Forest. Located in Woodland Township, Burlington County, this vast expanse of pitch pine and oak forest offers a genuine wilderness experience just an hour from Philadelphia.
The forest sits squarely within the Pinelands National Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized biosphere, and protects one of the most ecologically distinctive landscapes on the East Coast. The sandy trails wind through pygmy pine plains, cedar swamps, and cranberry bogs fed by tea-colored streams stained with natural iron and tannins. Pakim Pond, a peaceful spot near the forest office, is a favorite for picnicking and quiet reflection.
Hikers will find over 25 miles of marked trails, including a stretch of the 50-mile Batona Trail that cuts through the property. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and hunting are all popular in season. Birders come for species like the Pine Barrens treefrog and numerous warblers that thrive in this unique habitat.
The forest maintains campgrounds with both tent and group sites, though availability and amenities vary by season. Spring and fall are ideal for visiting — mild temperatures, fewer insects, and brilliant foliage in October make these months especially rewarding.
Byrne State Forest rewards visitors who come looking for solitude, ecological wonder, and the surprising wildness hiding in the most densely populated state in America.
