Barnegat Lighthouse

Rising above the northern tip of Long Beach Island, Barnegat Lighthouse has guided mariners along the New Jersey coast since 1835. Known locally as “Old Barney,” this historic beacon served as a critical navigational aid through decades of Atlantic storms before being decommissioned. The lighthouse is no longer active and is currently closed to public climbing, though its striking red-and-white tower remains one of New Jersey’s most photographed landmarks. Golden hour and winter sunsets offer the best photography conditions, with dramatic skies framing the tower against the ocean. Visitors can explore the surrounding Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, walk the rocky jetty, spot seabirds, and enjoy views of nearby Island Beach State Park across Barnegat Inlet.
