Double Trouble Village
New Jersey (Bayville County)
Double Trouble Village sits within the heart of New Jersey’s Pine Barrlands in Ocean County, preserving a remarkably intact cranberry bog village that operated from the late 1700s through the mid-20th century. The restored sawmill, cranberry sorting house, workers’ cottages, and general store offer a window into the rural industries that once defined this corner of the Jersey Shore hinterland.
Beyond the historic village, the park protects a striking stretch of Pine Barrens ecology — cedar swamps, pitch pine-oak forest, and the tea-colored waters of Cedar Creek. The creek is a favorite for kayaking and canoeing, winding quietly through dense Atlantic white cedar stands before eventually reaching Barnegat Bay. Paddlers can put in right at the village and float downstream through some of the most pristine waterway scenery on the coastal plain.
Hiking trails loop through the surrounding forest and along old cranberry bog dikes, where you’ll spot carnivorous sundew plants, rare Pine Barrens tree frogs, and an impressive diversity of dragonflies in summer. Birders find the cedar swamp particularly productive during spring migration. Fishing in Cedar Creek yields pickerel and sunfish for those willing to navigate the tannin-stained shallows.
Spring and fall deliver the best conditions — mild temperatures, fewer mosquitoes, and vivid seasonal color against the evergreen pines. Summer brings lush greenery but also biting insects, so plan accordingly.
Double Trouble rewards visitors who appreciate quiet history and wild landscapes existing side by side — a genuinely distinctive stop along the Jersey Shore corridor.
