Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park protects 3,400 acres of coastal wilderness along the Gulf of Mexico in Port Richey, Florida. Established in 2001, this Pasco County gem preserves one of the most intact salt marsh and coastal hammock ecosystems remaining on Florida’s central Gulf coast—a landscape that was nearly lost to development.

The park’s centerpiece is its network of salt springs and tidal creeks that wind through dense mangrove forests and open marshland. Paddlers will find some of the best kayaking in the region here, with marked water trails threading through sheltered mangrove tunnels where manatees, dolphins, and wading birds are regular companions. The park’s location on the Gulf makes it a prime spot for birding, with ospreys, roseate spoonbills, and bald eagles frequently spotted overhead.

On land, several miles of hiking trails cross through pine flatwoods and oak hammocks, offering a quieter alternative to Florida’s more crowded state parks. The trails are relatively flat and well-suited for all skill levels. Fishing is popular along the shoreline and from the park’s small dock, where anglers target redfish, snook, and spotted seatrout in the brackish waters.

The park does not currently offer developed campground facilities, so plan for a day visit. Winter and early spring (November through April) bring the most comfortable temperatures and the best wildlife viewing, with fewer mosquitoes than the humid summer months.
